Here's the plan. This is the crankshaft from the boiler side (1 is the most smokebox side placed cilinder and 3 the cabward side placed cilinder). First I'll cut the crankshaft at the yellow line. Than I'll cut it at the green line. As you can see the crankshaft between the cranks 1 and 2 is longer than between 2 and 3. That is prototypical to allow space for the valvegear of the middle cilinder. I can use this fact. I'll drill a hole in the left side of crank 3 where the crankshaft was located.I'll fit in crank no 1 pushing the excess length of the shaft left of the green line into the crank side. A drip of glue will fix the lot. Of course I'll have to guard two facts: that the new angle of the two remaining cranks is 90 degrees and that distance between the cranks 3 and 1 is exactly the same as the old distance between 2 and 1. It will do the job I think. I have a spare crankshaft so if I waste it no harm's done, I can stil use the other one to build a three cilinder version (but that feels like a sort of capitulation)
